All Mike Johnson Custom Cimbassi come with a main tuning intonation adjustment slide as standard. A second “tuning”slide in the main tubing, but with the ability to quickly adjust the intonation.

MJC Compact Cimbasso

MJC Compact Cimbasso

The MJC Compact Bass Cimbasso was developed for London freelance Tuba player John Elliott.
John's request was for an instrument that was compact and easy to carry around on public transport.
The instrument below, The John Elliott model, was the result. Built with a reversible 5th valve, it can be in F or Eb, by reversing the rotor arm. This version has the 4th valve on the left hand.

MJC Cimbassi are optimised so a Tuba player can play with ease, without adapting their technique, yet still have the instrument sound like a trombone when played quietly, instead of a round Tuba sound.

Available in a variety of bore sizes to suit the individual.

The MJC Compact is available in almost any key needed; anything from Bb Tenor to G, F, E, E flat, or D,
In piston or rotor, 4, 5, or 6 non-compensating or compensating valves. Bore sizes are also variable and can be discussed with order.
Available with Brass or Gold Brass bell and bell branch.

MJC Bass Cimbasso

The MJC Bass Cimbasso was developed for my personal use and was the product of extensive research.
Designed to fit 'under' the sound of the Bass trombone for operatic use, it does not have the overbearing issues of some Cimbassi. The design allows a Tuba player to blend with the Trombone's sound, rather than make a sound similar to a Euphonium when playing piano or pianissimo.
Available in a variety of bores to suit the player and the style of music it will be used for.
The MJC Bass Cimbasso is available in High Bb G, F, E, E flat, D, C, or low Bb.
In piston or rotor, 4, 5, or 6 non-compensating or compensating valves. Bore sizes are also variable and can be discussed with order.
Available with Brass or Gold Brass bell and bell branch.
Built with the MJC stable peg so it doesn’t wobble.

MJC compensating Bass Cimbasso

At MJC we now are building our own valves.
This latest model is compensating and in F.
Ordered by the Royal Danish Opera for their Bass/ Contrabass Trombonist Lars Haugaard. Lars is also a Euphonium player, so wanted the same valve system he’s used to on a compensating Euph, but in F so it’s the same pitch as his Contrabass Trombone.
As with all MJC Cimbassi it has 2 main tuning slides. One to set the basic pitch and the other to adjust he intonation ‘on the fly’ This one has the intonation slide operated by a trigger mechanism.
Built with the MJC stable peg so it doesn’t wobble.

MJC Full Double Cimbasso

Designed and built at MJC in 2021. The Full double instrument is the current culmination of around 20 years of thinking and planning.
With clear bore pistons designed and built entirely in house here at MJC.
The instrument is the same basic design as the MJC Bass Cimbasso with a 0.650”/16.5mm bore.
It is an Eb 4v and a Bb 4th valve built in one. So giving infinitely more alternatives than the single pitch instrument.
Imagine being able to play the semitone above the fundamental with only 2 valves in use!!

MJC Contrabass Cimbasso

The MJC Contrabass Cimbasso was added to the MJC Cimbasso Stable in 2018.
Designed with Studio work in mind. To say this is the ultimate in 'low and loud' is an understatement.
This instrument is perfect for second Cimbasso for film sessions.
The MJC Contrabass Cimbasso is available in C or BBb.
In piston or rotor, 4, 5, or 6 non-compensating or 4 compensating valves. Bore sizes are also variable and can be discussed with order.
Available with Brass or Gold Brass bell and bell branch.
